Shuen Chiu, a Pre-Med graduate, has always been an entrepreneur at heart. She was determined to do the best she can to bring Rent A Dress to life but faced many tough trials to get to where she is today.
Since an early age, Shuen has always been interested in commerce but followed her parents’ desire instead and ended up going to medical school. After graduating, she was again caught in a dilemma — whether to continue with science or pursue business.
“I was really interested in business and I thought to myself: why don’t I do my Masters? So I did my Masters in International Business from Monash University, Melbourne,” she said.
It was not until she attended a friend’s wedding dinner in 2014 that she got the idea for Rent A Dress — a boutique that gives everyone access to designer dresses without the designer price tag.
First started as a side project, she decided to fully dedicate her time and effort in early 2015. However, two years into the business, she found herself in a pickle. “Back in 2016, I lost my whole team; it went from 12 to zero. At that moment, I was really questioning myself,” Shuen commented.
Hesitant and doubtful, Shuen managed to pick herself up, all thanks to the people around her — her frenemy from her Masters day as well as her brother, who helped out with the business when she was alone. “I learned a lot of things about myself and about the people I surround myself with. I’m actually glad that it happened,” she added.
Now with a new team behind her, she has big plans for the future. “We have so many things planned! With the team that we have right now, I feel like there are so many things that we could do. We are in the midst of developing a new product and maybe more products after that as well.”
Shuen’s goal has always been to make quality items accessible and we do hope to see more from her and her Rent A Dress team in the future!
